Rip obtained his Canadian and American Championships within 6 days of each other. Not long after achieving these championships, Rip suffered a fibrocardilaginous infarction paralyzing his left side. Motion slowly returned to his left legs. Though he was somewhat cripple, Rip had no idea he was handicapped.
